Dialysis-related headache: prevalence and clinical features in patients on hemodialysis and after kidney transplantation

IntroductionHeadache is a common symptom among patients on hemodialysis, occurring in up to 70%. Dialysis headache defined by the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) as with no specific characteristics, during and caused which resolves spontaneously within 72 hours after session has ended. There consensus its pathophysiology or triggering factors. ObjectiveTo evaluate prevalence, clinical features factors associated dialysis chronic kidney disease renal replacement therapy. MethodsCross-sectional observational study quantitative approach. Participants were divided into two groups: (1) 25 hemodialysis (2) early post transplantation. All participants interviewed structured questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Blood pressure, weight, urea, glucose electrolytes evaluated before one session. Control groups classified headache-free each group. Numerical variables expressed mean standard deviation using Student's t test (two-tailed) Mann-Whitney U test. ResultsIn group (1), 8 (32%) diagnosed headache, predominantly pulsatile (n=6, 75%), accompanied photophobia phonophobia (n=4, 50%) nausea vomiting pain score 7.75 ± 1.58.
